Sketches #1

I have a couple of picture stories under works, not to mention my graphic novel projects, which seem to take most of my time, so I'm afraid I have nothing new to show here yet. So I dug up some skecthes I have done over months and decided to show them.

Few sketches of lovely miss Shu Pei I have done for fun. The last sketch above is a little study before doing the finished version of the same picture for the "Fine China" entry back in December 2009. I just wanted to see how she would look like with freckles :)

Just a random sketch of Kirsten Dunst. Been a fan for, well, quite a some time, which makes me wonder why I haven't done anything about her to the blog...

And lastly, some character studies for one comic strip project. For these faces I used unknown faces I have happened to bump into. The girl with glasses is based on a TV ad stills and the Japanese girl on images I saw in some random picture gallery a while ago.

Video the 80's - Take Two

Spunky girl pop - the singer as litil divil
Spunky girl pop - the divil shows her teeth
Up-beat girl rock - the band emerges
Up-beat girl rock - the singer in a serene montage
Rock ballad - a big-budget video with nothing to do with the lyrics
Rock ballad - more of the same with lazer-beam crowd behind an athletic show-off
Love ballad - with an elaborate mansion settings for a dramatic effect
Love ballad - the heroine meets a man (a ghost?) of her dreams inside the dreamy mansion
This is what you come up with when you run VH1 Classic all day long. I tried to capture more of the typical imaginery of the 80's music videos. Not only for nostalgic reasons but for sometimes even outrageous visual nonsense, which fascinates me to no end!

Dare Daul

These are among the first pictures I drew of Daul Kim in late summer last year. I don't know why I have kept them in the folder for so long so it was about time I showed them to you. Maybe it was painful to see them later, after that fateful November day. Remember Daul, wherever you are now, we will always love you.

Highway Angels

Shu Pei as Gaia
BoA as Viper
Grace Park as Zoom
Tao Okamoto as the Mekhanik
Laura Blokhina as Blaze
and Jessica Stam as the Princess
Somewhere, sometime, to the left of nowhere, there's a group of wickedly sexy girls who call themselves "Highway Angels". With authority matching her beauty, Gaia is a self-proclaimed mother to Highway Angels. She nurtures them with a fierce determination and loyalty. When the going gets tough, you can count on Gaia to get to the top of the situation. Viper's talent equals her looks. She is the most sought-after wheelman in the business and she knows it. If you're one of the lucky ones to afford Viper's fees, you already have gotten away with whatever you have been up to. Zoom was born on wheels - during a highway chase! Maybe that's why she enjoys nothing more than zooming away on highways with a hot wind blowing against her pretty face.

Mekhanik keeps each Highway Angel's engine running. No one knows her real name. She's just "Mekhanik" if you ask her. With her innocent face, no one dares even to suspect she might be a perpetrator in hiding. Blaze is blessed with a hot body and hot skills. Her winning streak in the underground races is already record-breaking. Viper could be the only one to challenge Blaze on four wheels for real but Viper is not interested in such petty things as driving fast just for the pleasure of it. Princess got her nickname for her pale blue eyes and angel face. She's eager to prove her monicker is just for window dressing and she's worthy of being a real Highway Angel.

Shu Pei random fun

Lovely Shu Pei is always such a delight to draw. Some of the drawings I have done simply for fun during the year don't fit any picture stories or such though but they deserve to be published anyway. Here's a collection of those random portraits; we start with a shaved-off eyebrows look from the January 2010 haute couture shows, then run through some tempting pouts and end up in a couple of fantasies with a red-shirted rookie runner (inspired by the excellent video game Mirror's Edge) and a spaghetti western character.
