A Chance for Love #1 - A Chance Meeting

I can't help it how big an impact Wong Kar-Wai's movies has on my art. As soon as I saw fresh backstage shots of Tao Okamoto from the fashion weeks, I imagined them into sort of 'In the Mood for Love' settings. For this picture story I would also need a love interest for the girl and I happened to find a perfect player from a supporting role in a German detective series. Actually it was my mother who noticed the man while watching the episode from the video and asked me if I could use him for some of my drawings. So I took digi snapshots from video stills for the reference. Without further ado, I present the first part of the new picture story.

Imaginary Movie: Scrapbook

When doing this latest installment of 'Imaginary Movie' I tried to form some sort of a story but in the end the pictures turned out to be more or less incoherent between themselves, hence the 'Scrapbook' in the title. In the bigger picture, they may sit in between earlier entries of the imaginary movie or even individual pictures in them.

Chen Jia Jia (陈佳佳)

I have featured pictures with Chinese martial arts actress Chen Jia Jia's (Angela Chen being her western name) likeness in some previous entries. This 25-years old budding star with characteristic features has been working on film and TV for mainly domestic market so in this side of the world she's quite unknown. Skilled martial artist with good performances in tournaments under her belt and known for her acrobatic fighting style, Chen is internationally perhaps best known for her impressive debut as general Kualo in Tsui Hark's Seven Swords. Without spoiling too much and giving credit to her strong presence, when she leaves the scene after some 40 minutes the movie becomes completely forgettable wushu wishwash. The first two pictures are modeled after stills of the said movie.

Shantytown Blues #2

As you may have noticed by now, my drawings are usually in 'widescreen' format with black borders, like movie stills. That's because I'd like to think them as 'production drawings' for unseen movies - my own movies. In a sense I consider myself as sort of a movie maker, doing it through drawing though, as weird and funny as it might sound. I rarely draw in vertical format, unless it's a full body shot which needs a lot of space instead of squeezing it into too small a frame.
